I'm passionate about harnessing the collective intelligence of people and organisations so they can collaborate to solve their biggest challenges.
The Zone’s vision is a world of enlightened leaders and enlightened organisations. This is what drives me now but it wasn’t always that way.
For the first 20 years of my career I was driven by greed and selfishness. At the cost of family, friends and my personal integrity I worked relentlessly to build a financially successful European business with over 600 employees and millions of dollars in annual revenue. What ultimately caused it to fail was me. In the race to reach the top I had transgressed my own values and lost touch with humanity. I created a business without heart, mechanical and machine like, self serving and ultimately not sustainable. From the ashes of this folly and the lessons that it taught me I made a decision to dedicate the remainder of my life to awakening heart, spirit and purpose in large organisations. It was from this intention that The Zone was born.
Organisations transcend borders, race, markets and politics. They have the power to change things, for good or bad. The Zone was created to increase the odds of organisations creating positive change in the world. It is my hope that it will become a legacy for future generations. For eighteen years, in twenty-five countries, in organisations ranging from Fortune 500’s to SME’s and family owned businesses, across industries as diverse as telecommunications to fashion, Biotechnology to banks, health care to airlines we have been supporting organisations to get into their zone. Along the way I learned a few things.
The work is simple but keeping it simple is often much harder than it sounds – to their detriment organisations often get obsessed with complexity. People and teams are what make organisations successful and they don’t get to be at their best without work. Most of the time people are too busy, stressed and splintered to think about it. Parenting four kids, from children, to teens, to young adults, taught me that leadership needs to evolve as an organisation matures. Teams develop in much the same way as people do; child, adolescent, young adult, mature adult. Leadership is a balance and you must use your power with people, not over them.
Perhaps the biggest truism I have learned is an organisation and its people need to be in their zone or they will stumble and suffer. Getting there isn’t easy, and sometimes it can feel like paddling across an ocean without a compass. To be successful you need the spirit of an adventurer, the courage of an explorer and the vision of a creator – and always believe in the magic. Everyone needs magic now and then.
For me The Zone has been a humbling journey of discovery into human potential and the evolution of organisational consciousness. Twenty years on my life and work is blessed with love, purpose, deep connections and true friends – the ones that hold me to my highest ideals. For that I am grateful and this blessing spurs me to give back and support others.
